Husband a policeman. He used to be occasionally transferred to different places. For some period of time she accompanied him. From the year 2049 B.S. Parbati has been engaged in farming and animal rearing. She lives in tilottama-12 Mahubari in Rupandehi district. Together with household chores Parbati took the sole responsibility of family responsibility. Looked after her children. Took care of small beautiful house.
They had 14 kattha of land inherited from the ancestral property. To set up her own enterprise Parbati took loan of Rs 8000/- from the Progressive Women Multipurpose Cooperative & Women Development Office and purchased a buffalo. Managed a shed for keeping buffalo in the adjoining space of the house with Rs 2000/-
Later she added cows as well. She could sell 45/50 liters of milk everyday to Shivashakti Milk Cooperatives. She is an active member of the same cooperative. When she started selling milk regularly her economic condition improved. Number of cows increased in the farm. She became busier. Now there are eight cows and a buffalo in the farm. Some cows are milking and some are pregnant. Nowadays she sells 60 to 70 liters of milk every day. A person is employed to look after the shed.
After his retirement from the job husband Ram Bahadur Khatri went to South Korea for foreign employment. From his earning from Korea Parbati started a tent house business in Kotihawa (a place near Bhairahawa). This business as well could give her additional income. Mostly tent house business is run by non Nepali citizens. Business incorporated with 2/3 lakhs investment is now worth Rs. 6/7 lakhs. Five local youths are getting seasonal employment in the tent house. She also bought a tractor to transport tent house materials to various locations. Nowadays this occupation is facing challenges due to opening of party palaces and big hotels, says Parbati. Peoples nowadays prefer party palaces or hotels to organize different auspicious events.
Parbati has understood well the value of hard labour. She doesn’t hesitate to take risk. She is regularly devoted to her work. She is moving ahead with firm determination and good understanding. A tractor that was purchased to transport tent house materials is now used in ploughing field and carrying construction materials. Seven youths are employed with tractor. She also owned a micro bus. Due to lack of a reliable worker (driver) she couldn’t manage it well so sold it out.
She has been earning a good sum of money through agriculture & farming in the limited land inherited from ancestral property. She has also taken additional land in lease from near relatives.
Parbati Khatri was just 14 years old when she was married. She was studying in 7th grade at that time. After marriage she could continue her study only for two more years. Her parents lived in Butwal so she studied in Kanti Secondary School in Butwal. Parbati’s formal education is limited to only class nine. However her experience & knowledge in entrepreneurship is not lesser than that of a formal business/commerce graduate. Husband had encouraged to study further but I had no motivation. I don’t know why, says Parbati.
Though she couldn’t study, her three daughters are studying well. They are pursuing professional education. Eldest daughter Pooja is studying MN (Master Degree in Nursing) in Australia. She has started to earn as well. Second daughter Aarati has completed MBBS in Ophthalmology (eye doctor) from Banglore. Now she is doing internship in Mumbai. Youngest daughter Aarju is studying BMLT.
Her daughters are proud of their enterprising mother. They are inspired by her hard working attitude. Parbati regrets for not completing formal education. I’ve missed several opportunities due to the lack of higher education, confesses Parbati. She further adds, opportunities knock everyone’s doorsteps but you can’t catch them without academic qualification.
Her family is an epitome of a happy family. She is marching ahead in the path of progress. Her husband’s support in this regard is praiseworthy.
Parbati’s enterprising endeavor inspires aspiring women entrepreneurs. Besides managing her family and business affairs she is actively involved in social service activities as well. She led Progressive Women Multipurpose Cooperative as the chairperson for eight consecutive years i.e. she completed successful four tenures as the chairperson. Now she is in the advisory role. She is attached to the cooperative as a member of credit sub-committee. She is also account coordinator in Shivashakti Milk Cooperative. She has been advocating women rights & welfare being an active member of Women Group (Aama Samuha) in the village.
She could add more land and build a new house through the earnings from her business. Could educate her daughters well. Parbati is an exemplary role model in the society. She has been able to build her own name & fame. Reasons behind Parbati’s success story are her hard labour, tireless effort and positive support from family.
